Acetonitrile Uses, Grades and Bulk Supply: What Industrial Buyers Should Know
Acetonitrile applications in pharmaceuticals and analysis, grade considerations and how to plan bulk supply from China.

Acetonitrile is the solvent procurement teams notice only when it is missing. Analytical laboratories use it daily, and pharmaceutical manufacturers depend on it for synthesis and purification work, so when a delivery slips or a batch drifts off-spec, the whole schedule absorbs the cost. Because bulk acetonitrile supply can tighten without much warning, relying on spot purchases is expensive in ways that do not show on the invoice: line stops, failed analytical runs and rushed re-orders. Knowing the grades and the supply structure before you buy separates a smooth acetonitrile program from a recurring headache.
What acetonitrile is used for
Acetonitrile (CAS 75-05-8, molecular formula C2H3N, molecular weight 41.05 g/mol) is a polar organic solvent with low viscosity and good chemical stability. Those properties make it a fixture in pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical synthesis and analytical laboratories, most visibly in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), where it is a standard mobile phase component.
Because applications differ, one acetonitrile quotation is not comparable to another. An analytical chemist running HPLC checks parameters that a production-scale synthesis may not care about, and the reverse is also true. Defining the specification before comparing suppliers is what makes the comparison meaningful.
In analytical work, acetonitrile is valued for its low UV cutoff and good elution strength, which is why method transfers often specify it by name rather than by function. In production it appears as a reaction solvent, in recrystallization and extraction, and as a processing aid where a polar, water-miscible solvent is needed. If you are evaluating a substitute, compare polarity, UV transparency and water miscibility against your method, not just the price.
Grades and specifications
Pharmaceutical processing, chemical synthesis and analytical use carry different purity expectations, and stating a percentage alone is not a complete specification. Name the parameters that matter to your process, such as purity, moisture, appearance and, for analytical work, UV absorbance, and require a batch-specific COA before you order and with every delivery. A dependable acetonitrile supplier provides the COA and SDS during the quotation stage and does not substitute a specification other than the one you approved.
Planning bulk acetonitrile supply
Acetonitrile is typically exported in 160 kg drums, and supply can be arranged as FCL or LCL depending on product and destination requirements, so the chemical is practical to buy from a trial order up to recurring annual volume. As a flammable liquid it ships under UN number 1648, which makes UN-standard packaging, hazard labeling and a complete transport document set mandatory. Treat a supplier that treats those requirements as optional as a risk.
Bulk programs work better when you share a volume picture with the supplier. That allows the supplier to align stock, drum supply and booking windows around your schedule instead of reacting order by order. Confirm lead time, port of loading and how batch continuity is handled across shipments, because a bulk program is only as dependable as its second and tenth delivery.
Think about drum rotation and stock age as part of the plan. Acetonitrile is stable under normal storage, but the drums you receive should be recent production with a clear date code, and older stock should rotate out before it reaches you. Ask how the supplier manages stock age across the network, and you will learn more about their operation than any brochure reveals.
Working with an acetonitrile supplier
Evaluate quality control as a process rather than a statement. A supplier with a full-category hazardous chemical business license, export experience and a documented inspection routine keeps specification and documents stable over many shipments. At Shandong Yuandafeng Chemical that routine is a three-step check covering incoming sampling, retained-sample rechecking and pre-shipment inspection on every shipment. Responsiveness is the second screen: clear answers on availability, paperwork and delivery windows are the simplest insurance a buyer can take.
Request a quotation
Send the product name (acetonitrile, CAS 75-05-8), the grade or specification you need, estimated quantity, preferred packaging of 160 kg drums and your destination port to annie@ydfchem.com, or contact us on WhatsApp at +86 156 8428 8875. We will confirm availability and prepare a supply plan around your delivery schedule. Indicate whether this is a one-time purchase or an annual program, so the quotation reflects the supply structure you actually need.
